Manotick is a community that comes with a great history. Coming from an Ojibwa word meaning “Island in the River”, Manotick was the name chosen by its original founders Moss Kent Dickinson and Joseph Merrill Currier. In the 1830s, following the construction of the Rideau Canal, Dickinson and Currier were credited for settling the village for the purposes of lodging, milling, and trading. The men built Watsons Mill and Dickinson House, located next to one another on the Rideau River, which remains standing today and is frequented by residents and visitors alike. Other sites such as the multiple Churches, the Ayres Building, and Weaver’s house highlight the beautiful architecture and antiquity that Manotick has come to be widely recognized for.
These are only a few of the buildings within the cities borders that hold great historical significance. Other areas and businesses such as The Mill Tavern, Manotick Garage, and multiple standing homes on O-Grady Street and Tighe Street underscore the city’s continued dedication to preserve and celebrate the history here.
